What is an IP address?

An IP address is a string of numbers assigned to all devices which are connected in a network through the internet, it uses Internet Protocol as a communication medium. An IP addressing is the unique way of addressing in which all connected devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc., have their own individual IP address for identification. We can’t imagine this digital world without IP addresses because all the devices connected through the internet have been identified by their IP address itself.
Each IP address consists of four sections of numbers, each section is separated by the dot and each section consists of one to three digit numbers ranging from 0 to 255. There are several types IP address available in which we can see briefly about some of them: There are four types of consumer IP address such as:
i) Public IP address: Public IP address can act as primary IP address for all connected devices in the network, i.e all devices in that network have the same IP address. This type of IP address is provided by the Internet Service Provider for the router.
ii) Private IP address: As its name specifies, private IP address is a unique IP address, in which all the devices have separate IP address and also it can be changed every time when you are connected to the network.
iii) Dynamic IP address: Dynamic IP address gets changed every time when it connects to the network it’s a temporary address so the origin of the address can be traced by the collection of addresses connected to the network. It is assigned by Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
iv) Static IP address: In contrast to the dynamic IP address, it has never been changed once allocated to a device, but in some situations it can be altered by the network administration.
